ACTIVITIES- Trekking around Puako

If you would like an organised trek, contact Hawai'i Forest and Trail for some of their trekking adventures.

There is a 15.4 mile unpaved trail along the coast that includes Puako. This section of the Ala Kahakai Trail from Kawaihae-Anaehoomalu follows the coastline over ancient fisherman’s trails and Hawaiian Kingdom roads (except within the Puako community where the “official” trail follows Puako Beach Drive). This trail receives limited maintenance and little signage and caution is advised near the sea cliffs. It has great cultural and historical significance and so must be respected. More information on coastal trails is available at the State of Hawai'i Na Ala Hele Program or call (808) 974-4221.

For a shorter walk, go and visit the Puako Petroglyphs.
