Puako is a no-net Fishery Management Area (FMA), sandwiched between a Fisheries Replenishment Area (FRA) to the south and a Marine Life Conservation District in Waialea Bay (MLCD) to the north. All of the coastline here is part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. All total, there are four areas of different levels of protection located in an area of 7 miles along Puako's coastline.
